WITHOUT VERONA WALLS

SYNOPSIS

Romeo has been banished from Verona after killing the cousin of his forbidden lover, Juliet. In Mantua, he meets fellow exiles who are forced in isolation to consider suffering, loneliness, ice cream, and nudity. An absurd tragicomedy with music inspired by William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

Romeo on Veronast pagendatud, sest ta tappis oma keelatud armastatu Julia nõbu. ACT 1
Romeo arrives in Mantua. While contemplating his very existence, he is encountered by an Ice Cream salesman who tries to provide him some sugary comfort on a hot day. Frustrated after their exchange, he is interrupted mid-thought by two exiles - he tries their method of coping with suffering to no avail. A new exile appears and provides Romeo with yet a new outlook on his situation. They discuss prayer, mothers, and canoes. Their peaceful conversation is then abruptly shifted by an aggressive exile who opposes all that has just been said. Finally, after songs and conspiracy and a bit of recycling, the trio winds up in a mad dance.

ACT 2
A musician enters. His music captivates two custodians who join in his song. But the party stops with a somber announcement.

ACT 3
Romeo has decided which ice cream flavor he would like to buy. Alas, he is met with disappointment. A character he met previously returns with a new piece of technology. Together, they discover that, despite being from Verona, Romeo doesn’t speak Italian after all. Another announcement brings more bad news. Romeo is finally confronted with the reality of his situation as the consequences of his actions in Verona catch up to him.

1. VAATUS

BRENNEN AMONETT

is a Kentucky-born actor and musician. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Dramatic Arts and International Studies, and the bulk of his professional background is in Shakespearean performance. Affinities for country music, alternative comedy, and ice cream are all great influences in his new endeavor with The Babel Manoeuvre and their new show, Without Verona Walls.

JULIANA DE ARAGÃO

is a Brazilian actor and writer. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, where she studied Meisner and Grotowsky techniques at the Experimental Theatre Wing. She has also studied Shakespeare at the Drama Centre in London and physical theatre at the Jacques Lecoq school in Paris. She is also a musician, tennis player, singer and a rookie stand up comedian.

JOHN HARPER

is an actor and writer, who studied writing for performance at Ruskin College, Oxford, and studied acting at the International Theatre School of Jacques Lecoq in Paris. He also taught English literature for many years and has a passion for classic texts. John hosts a podcast about laughter, which is unsurprising as one of his greatest pastimes is laughing hysterically.
